Dr. Herbert W. Riemenschneider

Dr. Herbert William Riemenschneider:
Innovative Expert, Devoted Practitioner

In medicine, as in other fields of science, there is a mainstream of thought which can afford a comfortable practice for those who merely follow the norms. But in every age there is also a leading edge—a small band of pioneers who move the mainstream toward new discoveries, new treatments and new solutions to age-old afflictions. It is a matter of devotion; the pioneers never rest until their vision of a new day is realized.

In a career devoted to research and development of effective new treatments, Dr. Herbert Riemenschneider stands apart as a medical pioneer and clinical visionary—and as one of the few true experts in his specialized field. As a urologic surgeon, a dedicated patient advocate and an innovator in delivering superior urologic care, Dr. Riemenschneider has devoted his life to creating the most profound legacy a medical researcher and practitioner can hope for: hundreds of his patients have reclaimed their lives from a potentially-devastating disease. This is a legacy to which many doctors aspire and few can claim: saving lives in new ways by having the courage and insight to see beyond the strictures of today and the limits of prior clinical practice. Patients of all kinds are fortunate to find such prescient practitioners.

Now you can, too.

Dr. Riemenschneider completed his undergraduate studies in chemistry at The Ohio State University and is a graduate of The Ohio State University College of Medicine. As a medical student, he focused on renal physiology and renal medicine. Residency
Dr. Riemenschneider completed his urologic residency at Indiana University under Dr. Robert Garrett, Chairman of the Urology Department and a pioneer of pediatric urology; and under Dr. John Donahue, who developed the surgical cure for testicular cancer.

Postgraduate Work
Dr. Riemenschneider’s postgraduate training included work with Dr. Donald Skinner of the University of Southern California, creating surgical replacements of cancerous bladders using the patient’s own bowel segment to avoid the need for an appliance following radical surgery. Dr. Riemenschneider’s other California training included work with Dr. Shlomo Raz at UCLA, learning techniques for dealing with female pelvic floor relaxation, which can cause pelvic organ displacement and urinary incontinence.

Most recently, Dr. Riemenschneider completed postgraduate training at the University of California Irvine School of Medicine, Department of Urology, Mini Residency, Laparoscopic Ablative Urology, 2006 and Ureteroscopy and Pericutaneous Renal Access,  2007.

Dr. Riemenschneider also spent time at Baylor University with Dr. Brantley Scott during the development of the artificial urinary sphincter (AUS). The AUS remains the standard for dealing with severe male urinary incontinence. Dr. Scott included Dr. Riemenschneider in the research studies that resulted in the creation of the prosthesis for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

Teaching
Throughout his research and practice career, Dr. Riemenschneider has also been involved in teaching. He is currently a member of the faculty at The Ohio State University. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Urology at OSU’s College of Medicine and Director of Urologic Education at Riverside Methodist Hospitals.

Publications and Clinical Trials
Dr. Riemenschneider has authored fifteen peer-reviewed publications and has submitted seventeen abstracts for presentation at regional and national meetings. He has delivered over 175 lectures and participated in numerous exhibits involving urologic scientific poster presentations, in addition to other research presentations.  He participated in the Phase Four clinical trail for Viagra and was instrumental in bringing extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, for the treatment of kidney stones, to Columbus in the mid-1980’s. He also introduced the Columbus urologic community to the procedure of transrectal ultrasound of prostate.

Pioneering Procedures
In 1993, Dr. Riemenschneider developed an interest in minimally invasive treatments for prostate cancer. He performed the first prostate cryoablation in Ohio in 1993. He continues to perform prostate cryoablation and recently presented his experiences with this treatment at the “Advances and Controversies in Cryotherapy” meeting in February 2008.

Advisory Committees and Board Memberships
Dr. Riemenschneider is a member of the Health Policy Committee of the American Urologic Association and has been the urology representative on the Ohio Medicare Carrier Advisory Committee since 1992. He is a member of the board of the Ohio Urological Society.  Dr. Riemenschneider created the Riverside Urology Prostate Cancer Support Group in 1990. This group is an active member of the “US Too” national prostate cancer support group.

Dr. Riemenschneider developed the Knightsbridge Medical and Surgical Building, home to the Knightsbridge Surgery Center (KSC). He sits on the KSC Board of Directors.

Philosophy and Practice
Although Dr. Riemenschneider’s interests in urology have been diverse, including academic programs, clinical research and community outreach programs, his focus has always been on the clinical practice of urology.  His prime purpose involves putting the patient’s interest first and bringing the patient the most contemporary information and treatment options for urologic problems.

Our Patient Experience

I think my golf game has improved since I had my enlarged prostate treated. I don’t get up as much at night and I am sleeping much better.

Did you know...

The best way to protect yourself from kidney stones is to drink 8-12 glasses of water each day. Most kidney stones occur in the summer when you are most likely to become dehydrated.
